Pope Scola? Just saying…

I’m not that interested in the election of the new Pope – after all, any institution that automatically excludes half of the population from having any active participation in its power is irrelevant and destined to fade away evenutally – but listening to some of the english-language coverage (in particular RTE’s prime time) of the upcoming conclave and possible Popes has me twitching.

For example, we had a description of one of the favourites at the moment, Cardinal Angelo Scola, Archbishop of Milan, which talked about his theological credentials (he has them, apparently), and his lack of practical knowledge of the Roman Curia. He’s ‘conservative’ and a ‘reformer’ apparently…

No mention of his links to Communion and Liberation, the huge ¬†lay ecclesial movement which is mired in political and financial scandals, having linked itself to Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party back in the early 90s. No mention either of the fact that Scola was apparently one of a number of CL members that were sent to take care of Berlusconi’s ‘political formation’¬† – his ethical¬† and philosophical education when entering into politics back in1994.

What a splendid job he did…
